Prolifera Reef Pendant

£80

The Prolifera reef, silver pendant necklace, made on the Isle of Arran by Jess MacDonald Brass

The Prolifera necklace takes its name from Lophelia prolifera, an old scientific name once used for the cold-water reef coral better known as Lophelia pertusa. The name carries the idea of prolific growth, and that became the starting point for this piece.
Small silver forms gather closely together, an artistic interpretation of coral growth becoming part of something larger, and of the abundance of life a reef can support.

There is something reassuring in that idea. What we nurture, protect and contribute can become part of something richer than ourselves.

The story beneath the piece -
Cold-water coral reefs grow in the dark waters off western Scotland, including near Mingulay and Barra. As the coral grows outwards it builds a hard, three-dimensional structure, creating shelter and surfaces where other marine life can settle and live.

That gathering of life is at the heart of Prolifera. Many small silver forms become one piece, capturing the sense of growth upon growth and life gathering around life.

My jewellery is individually hand-crafted or made in small batch production which is hand-finished - this is reflected in the final finish of each piece. This means that it will not be the same as machine made or mass-produced jewellery. Instead, it gives each of my designs a special artisanal touch.
