Flapper Skate Silver Necklace

A Flapper Skate silver pendant necklace made on the Isle of Arran.

The flapper skate is the world's largest skate, growing to almost 3 metres long and 2 metres wide, and living for many decades. It's slow to grow and slow to mature, and its huge egg cases can take more than a year to hatch. This is an incredible creature built on patience, from egg to full-grown adult.

Once widespread across British waters, the flapper skate is now critically endangered, and the seas around Scotland are one of its last real strongholds. Gliding low over the seabed, built wide and flat for a life spent close to the sand and mud, it's easy to miss  and that's exactly the point. It's still here, quietly holding on in our wild seas, waiting to be noticed.

If you wear the flapper skate, you wear care for the ocean and a recognition of the sheer endurance of a creature that's hanging on regardless. Pushed to the edge by humans, its numbers are now starting to increase, with the help of humans too. A reminder that when we put our minds to it and work together, we can help bring back what was almost lost.
