Lophelia Reef Pendant
The 'Lophelia' reef, silver pendant necklace, made on the Isle of Arran by Jess MacDonald Brass
Lophelia pertusa is the only reef-forming coral in British waters. Like any reef, it creates a habitat, home to fish, sponges and countless smaller creatures that shelter within its structure.
Off Scotland, it has been found growing unusually shallow, above 150 metres near Mingulay and Barra. Colonies grow outward in rings, with younger colonies forming around them.
The Lophelia pendant takes that idea of gathering and growth rather than copying the coral itself. It is a reminder of the hidden worlds beneath Scottish waters and of how much life can grow from one small beginning.
Perhaps there is something in that for us too. Small acts of care, repeated and shared, can become something far greater than any one of us could create alone.
My jewellery is individually hand-crafted or made in small batch production which is hand-finished - this is reflected in the final finish of each piece. This means that it will not be the same as machine made or mass-produced jewellery. Instead, it gives each of my designs a special artisanal touch.
